Roof Gardens: Structure, Planting and Urban Life

A roof garden is a small landscape system supported by careful architectural coordination.

Successful roof landscapes start with structural capacity, drainage, waterproofing and access.

01

Build the section first

Protection layers, root barriers, drainage and growing medium must be coordinated as one assembly.

02

Create microclimates

Shade, shelter and adapted planting turn an exposed roof into a comfortable extension of the building.

03

Resolve the roof assembly first

The roof build-up should be coordinated with structural, waterproofing and landscape specialists before planting is selected. Growing medium, water and occupied areas create loads that must be assessed for the actual building. Drainage outlets, inspection points and protection layers require access. A landscape image should therefore be accompanied by a resolved section that explains how the system can be constructed and maintained.

04

Plan for exposure and care

Rooftops may have very different wind, sunlight and temperature conditions from the street below. Select planting with the landscape team for those conditions and the available maintenance regime. Irrigation, access for replacement and safe movement by maintenance staff should be designed into the layout. Shade and shelter also need coordination, particularly where people will sit for extended periods.

05

Give outdoor rooms a purpose

A roof garden can support quiet retreat, gathering or a combination of uses, but each needs an appropriate setting. Consider privacy from surrounding buildings and the acoustic effect of social areas. Paths should connect entrances, seating and service points without fragmenting planting unnecessarily. Clear relationships between hardscape, planting and furniture help the roof feel like a considered extension of the building.
