Multisensory Architecture: Designing Beyond Sight

Space is understood through sound, touch, temperature, smell, movement and memory as much as vision.

A FARHO interior connecting light, planting and living space

Architecture becomes richer and more inclusive when design considers the full body.

01

Design the atmosphere

Surface, mass, light, air movement and planting shape sound, temperature and scent.

02

Make perception inclusive

Tactile cues, clear acoustics, tonal contrast and legible thresholds aid navigation for many users.

03

Map experience through movement

Walk mentally through the building at different times of day. The sound at an entrance, the texture of a handrail and the shift in temperature near glazing all contribute to understanding a place. Record these experiences alongside the visual composition. This approach can reveal where a dramatic transition is welcome and where continuity, reassurance or clear orientation matters more.

04

Coordinate sensory decisions

Materials influence more than colour and texture. A hard surface affects sound, a glazed opening changes light and temperature, and planting introduces its own maintenance needs. Review these interactions rather than specifying each in isolation. The appropriate balance depends on use: a lively social space and a room for concentration need different acoustic and environmental conditions even within the same project.

05

Design for different users

People perceive and navigate space in different ways. Tactile information, legible contrasts and clear acoustic cues can complement visual wayfinding, but they should be coordinated with accessibility requirements and user feedback. Avoid overwhelming every sense at once. A considered environment offers clear information and comfortable choices while allowing the architectural character to emerge through use and memory.
